Effects of Participating in Mindfulness Skills Training Class
Background: Mindfulness has been demonstrated to be associated with resilience to stress. A 6-session Mindfulness Skills Training Group (Mindfulness for Everyone) was offered to adults at local yoga studios. Each class included guided meditations and discussion. Participants received audio downloads and written materials to support home practice. 55 students participated in the study and reported practicing mindfulness 10-30 minutes 3-5 days per week.
Method: In the first class and in the last class, participants completed two measures related to states of awareness and stress: the Mindfulness Awareness Scale and the Stress Management Subscale of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile. Pre-test and post-test scores from 55 participants were been analyzed.
Results: Post–test scores reflected statistically significant increases in awareness and engagement in health promoting behaviors at the end of the 6-week session. There was also a positive correlation between scores with higher scores in awareness predicting a higher score in health promoting behaviors.
